Past perfect

On this page you can choose to read, listen, or practise the past perfect. First you will see the written part, followed by a photo. Then there is a video which is followed by exercises. It is up to you what you prefer to use.

The past perfect tense shows a time earlier than before now. It shows that one thing happened before another thing happened in the past.

The past perfect is made by subject + had + past participle (voltooid deelwoord)

Positive examples:

  • He had finished the test when the bell rang.
  • They had filmed the scene when the thunder roared.
  • She had eaten when her mother came in.

A negative sentence is made by subject + had not + past participle.

Negative examples:

  • He had not (hadn’t) finished the test when the bell rang.
  • They had not (hadn’t) filmed the scene when the thunder roared.
